Five-Week Lenten Study Series:
Speaking Truth to Power: The Life and Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

When Hitler took power in Germany, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young Lutheran pastor, made the decision to actively oppose the Third Reich and to distance himself from the churches that had acquiesced to the regime’s ideology. His spiritual and political journey--and the questions he raised in his writings about what it means to live in accordance with the Gospels—have particular relevance in today’s turbulent political climate.
Beginning Thursday, Feb. 26 and continuing for four subsequent Thursdays, we will examine Bonhoeffer’s life and discuss how it relates to today’s world. Each session will consist of a presentation by Pastor Lena Warren, followed by a discussion. Session 1 (2/26) will focus on Bonhoeffer’s early life and the situation he faced in Germany; Session 2 (3/5) will look at the effect the Black Church in Harlem had on Bonhoeffer’s spiritual outlook; Session 3 (3/12) will examine Bonhoeffer’s efforts to develop the “confessing church” in opposition to the Lutheran church’s abdication to Hitler; Session 4 (3/19) will explore his work in the anti-Nazi resistance; and Session 5 (3/26) will dive into his written works, many of which were completed in prison.
Each session begins at 6:30 pm, following our weekly Vigil for Peace. If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to join us via zoom by clicking here.
