Ending Homelessness
Port Jervis Warming Station

Since 2016, St. Peter’s has hosted the Port Jervis Warming Station, administered by Together in Hope, Inc., which provides shelter, food and hospitality in the winter months to people from the tri-state area experiencing homelessness. Each year from November to April, the Warming Station provides a welcoming environment to 20-30 adults each night. In addition to a safe place to sleep, guests receive a hot evening meal and breakfast, along with access to showers, laundry, clean clothes and connection to local social services.

The Warming Station is sustained by dozens of community volunteers who serve meals, wecome guests and stay overnight. If you would like to provide meals for guests, click here. You can also get involved by helping the Warming Station with daily needs. Read more about the homelessness in Port Jervis here and about the Warming Station here.

Preserving God's Creation
Port Jervis Repair Cafe

Each year thousands of tons of usable materials – from electronics to furniture – wind up in landfills because manufacturers provide no way to repair these items. While the “right to repair” movement is working on the state and federal s to enact legislation to compel companies that make electronics and other objects to provide for their repair, St. Peter’s hosts the Port Jervis Repair Café where people can bring all sorts of objects – lamps, vacuum cleaners, clocks, chairs, electronics, small appliances, digital items, clothing, textiles, dolls, stuffed animals, toys, jewelry and more!  Most items get fixed, but even when they don’t, we have a good time trying.

The Port Jervis Repair Café is held on the third Sunday of the from 1:00-4:00 pm. Call St. Peter’s at 845-856-1033 or email stpeterspj@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer your skills.

Aiding Refugees
St. Peter's Quilting Group

Each month, members of St. Peter’s Quilting Group meet to construct quilts for refugees as part of Lutheran World Relief’s efforts to respond to global disasters. Quilts are sent to refugee communities all over the world are used as warm bedding, simple tents or floor coverings and are distributed to families in areas of natural disasters or war. No experience in sewing or quilt making is needed to participate. The Quilting Group is a great way to learn a new skill in a friendly and cooperative setting. The Group meets on the second Sunday of the month, from 1-3 pm.

Growing Food for Those in Need
St. Peter's Community Garden

Port Jervis has one of the highest rates of poverty in the region, with more than 30% of residents living below the poverty line. Many families struggle to put food on the table.  While we no longer have a large community garden, members of St. Peter’s now grow food in beds around the church, and encourage those with home gardens to donate extra produce to local food pantries for distribution to those in need.  We invite members of the community to join with us. To get involved, please contact the church office at 845-856-1033 or at stpeterspj@gmail.com
